This type of typeface is found all over Austria and is increasingly used on old street signs in Vienna. Since this old signs were not created with vinyl letters it was impossible to find the computer-font. That was reason enough for me to drive through Vienna and take pictures of every sign I found until I had all the letters of the alphabet together. The design of the individual glyphs was then more difficult than initially imagined, since the letters on the signs differed slightly from one another in height, width and style.

One thing I wanna say about the use of Gothic Typefaces. Unfortunately, this type of font is falsely charged with the image of the National Socialists. It is therefore surprising that it was the Nazis who forbade the gothic fonts. I hope, with designing and using "Altwien", I can help bring back the reputation of gothic fonts that they deserve!
